The New Nation Birthstone of the Nation 20th Century Use of Aquia Stone

20th Century Use of Aquia Stone

From 1925 through 1930, there was only one quarry in operation on Aquia Creek.  The George Washington Stone Corporation opened up the old Rock Rimmon Quarry that had operated in the early 1800s.  This time the quarry used a steam driven channeling machine and railroad.  Stone would be shipped to Alexandria where the company had a sawing machine to cut the stone into desired sizes. Stone from this quarry had been delivered as far south as North Carolina, as far north as Connecticut, and as far west as Ohio.  (Photo courtesy of Wilber Segar)
